What is Friction Welding?

• Friction welding is a solid-state process achieved by frictional heat.
• This heat is generated through controlled contact of the two components until the material reaches its plastic state, at which point the plasticized material begins to form intertwined layers.
• Friction welders control this contact through a unique set of rotational speed (rpm), axial force and time parameters.
• Once these parameters are established, they are recorded, stored, and then repeated with each cycle of the machine.

Energy is provided by an electric motor connected directly to the machine shaft. This energy source is infinite in time and is applied to the interface material until an appropriate total thermal or plastic state is achieved. Velocity is kept constant for a selected time and/or distance as pressure is varied. When the desired plastic state is reached, the rotating part is stopped and a forging load is applied to complete the joining process, bringing the parts together as a whole. Inertial friction welding enables greater total heat, which may slow down cooling, resulting in slightly longer cycle times.
