The cement production process is mainly divided into three stages: raw material preparation, clinker calcination, and cement grinding, that is, “two grinding and one burning”.

Generally speaking, the cement industry produces Portland cement, which is a fine, gray powder, It consists of calcium (from limestone), silicates, aluminates (clay) and ferrite. In a silicate cement plant, cement production has the following main stages:

  • Raw material preparation

  1. Limestone is the main raw material for cement production, and most of the plants are located near the limestone quarry to minimize transportation costs.
  2. Extraction of raw materials (limestone, shale, silica and pyrite) by blasting or using a cutting machine.
  3.  The raw material is sent to a crusher where it is broken or hammered into pieces.
  4. The crushed material enters the raw material grinding workshop and is ground by a vertical mill and a ball mill. The raw materials are ground finer to achieve high quality mixing.
  5.  The raw meal is ultimately transported to a homogenization yard for storage and further material mixing.

  • Clinker Calcination

  1. The diameter of the clinker spherical agglomerate must be within the range of 0.32-5.0 cm;
  2. The high temperature processing system consists of three steps: drying or preheating, calcining, and sintering. Calcination is a core part of this process. The raw meal is continuously weighed and fed to the cyclone at the top of the preheater. The material in the preheater is heated by the rising hot air. In the large rotary kiln, the raw material is converted into clinker at 1450 °C.
  3. The clinker enters the grate cooler from the kiln head for thermal regeneration and cooling. The cooled clinker is then transferred to the clinker bin for storage using a tray conveyor.

  • Cement Grinding

  1. The clinker is taken out of the clinker silo and sent to the feed bin for mixing with gypsum and additives before entering the clinker mill.

  2. During the clinker grinding process, the clinker and other materials are ground together into a fine powder. Up to 5% of the gypsum or additional anhydrite is added to control the setting time of the cement, and other compounds are added. Many plants use a roller crusher to obtain clinker and gypsum that can be reduced to a predetermined size, which are then sent to a ball mill for the remaining grinding process.

  3. Grinding process in a closed system, the system is equipped with an air separator for separating the cement particles by size, not completely milled material is re-sent through the system.

  • Storage and shipping

  1. Finished cement is stored in a huge concrete silo.

  2. The cement can be shipped to the customer in bulk or in the wagon, or it can be bagged and sent in a standard truck.
