Subcritical Fluid Extraction

Subcritical fluid extraction is a fluid diffusion separation extraction technology. Compared with supercritical CO2 extraction technology, it has the advantages of low operating pressure, simple process, low energy consumption, low investment, and easy industrialized large-scale production. It solves the defects of small size, high cost, high energy consumption and industrialized large-scale production of supercritical extraction equipment. Compared with traditional solvent extraction, subcritical fluid extraction has the advantages of normal temperature extraction, low temperature desolvation, non-denaturation of protein, non-oxidation of oil, no damage to active ingredients, easy solvent removal, and reduction of "three wastes" emissions.

Definition of subcritical fluid.

The state in which a solvent exists in a liquid state at a pressure above its boiling point but below its critical temperature is defined as the subcritical state of the solvent, which is also the liquefied state of the gas. The process of extraction in this solvent state is called a subcritical extraction process.

Types of subcritical fluids.

The boiling point of the solvent suitable for subcritical extraction is generally below 0 °C, and the liquefaction pressure at 20 °C is below 0.8MPa (gauge pressure). For example, under large-scale production conditions, the working pressure of butane is 0.4 MPa, and the extraction temperature is room temperature or below 40 degrees.

Commonly used subcritical solvents are: propane, butane, dimethyl ether, tetrafluoroethane (R134a), liquid ammonia, water

Fundamentals of Subcritical Fluid Extraction.

When the temperature of the solvent substance is higher than its boiling point, it exists in a gaseous state and is compressed and liquefied by a certain pressure. In this state, the solvent used for substance extraction is a subcritical extraction solvent utilizing similar compatible physical properties. The extraction process is called subcritical extraction process. Solvents suitable for subcritical extraction have boiling points lower than the ambient temperature around us. Generally, the boiling point is below 0°C, and the liquefaction pressure at 20°C is below 0.8MPa. The material is countercurrently extracted with a liquefied subcritical solvent under a certain pressure at room temperature, and the obtained extract is evaporated under reduced pressure at room temperature to separate the solvent and the extracted target component to obtain a (crude grade) product. The evaporated solvent is recompressed and liquefied for recycling. The solvent in the raffinate is also recovered and liquefied for reuse. It should be noted that when the solvent is vaporized from the material, it needs to absorb heat (latent heat of vaporization), so the material should be heated during evaporation and desolvation; the solvent gas will release heat (hydraulic latent heat) when it is compressed and liquefied, and the process is relatively large. Part of the heat can be saved by heat exchange between vaporizing and liquefying the solvent.

.Extraction process

This equipment uses butane as the extraction solvent and is divided into four parts: 1. Extraction system; 2. Mixed oil evaporation system; 3. Circulation system; 4. Solvent recovery system.
