As one might expect from the name, Graduation Heads are all about graduations. Segmentation is not about moving a certain angle, but dividing the entire circle into a specific number of parts. The most obvious use is when cutting gears. This circle must be divided by the number of teeth required for the gear to be cut. (Of course, the teeth are not actually cut - rather the space between them is.) One tooth is cut, then the workpiece is rotated the required amount, then the next tooth is cut, and so on until all the teeth All are chipped. The tooth has been severed.

Most indexing heads have a built-in indexing ring. It is fixed on the spindle. It has spaced holes around it and a pin mechanism that locks the spindle into any of these holes. This form of indexing eliminates the need for worms and worm gears. These can be lifted. The workpiece is free to rotate except where the indexing pin is locked to the indexing plate. Of course, the only number that can be divided is the number of holes on the index plate. But a lot of times it's useful.

This has the advantage of rotating the spindle much faster than using a worm and worm gear. It is also possible to engage the worm and worm gear and use a handle to turn it, then use an indexing plate to lock the spindle.
