There are two main types of aluminum brazing fluxes: water-soluble and non-corrosive.

Water-soluble aluminum fluxes contain ingredients that absorb moisture from the air. It can be mixed with water to make a paste, but once mixed with water, the components in the flux will hydrolyze and begin to lose their function. Therefore, the effective life of this aluminum flux mixed with water is less than 4 hours. Our customer specified a procedure in which flux must be used up two hours after mixing with water. Flux life is also limited after exposure to moist air.

Due to the solubility of this aluminum flux, no residue is left after rinsing with water after brazing. However, this flux solution is very corrosive to metal materials, so the brazing area needs to be thoroughly rinsed.

Another is called non-corrosive aluminum flux. The most popular flux ingredient is potassium fluoroaluminate (FB501). TiBright has developed a new similar FB503 with lower temperature. In addition, the main component of FB502 is cesium potassium fluoroaluminate. This has a low melting point (430°C) and water solubility. It is also the most expensive one.

There is also a third flux, FB504, developed by TiBright. FB504 has materials that react with aluminum and create an active layer on the aluminum surface. This surface can act as filler metal, which means that no more filler metal is needed.
