With incredibly low running costs, modest but practical city performance and funky retro looks, the Suzuki GN 125 is an ideal city motorcycle or learner bike.

  • related: Best 125cc Motorcycles

Very easy to drive, with a reliable engine and minimal maintenance, the Suzuki GN 125 is forgiving and a great confidence builder. Poor brakes and finish let it down a bit, but for a real-world workhorse, it's a steal.

Ride Quality and Brakes

Next: Engine
3 of 5 (3/5)

The natural riding position means the Suzuki GN 125 is comfortable even over longer distances. The suspension is on the soft side but handles everyday roads, but the brakes (especially the front) lack bite. The handling is light and the ride is confident and stable. However, the GN 125 can acquire vibrations at higher rotational speeds.

Next step: reliability
4 out of 5 (4/5)

The Suzuki GN125 engine is taken from an earlier GS 125 machine that came out in 1984, so it's safe to say it's already proven itself. A simple but solid single, it's cold enough in town, and while it can be breathless on the open road, the hills can be a problem if you're in a hurry. It can become unstable when starting out cold. A lot of revs are required.

Reliability and Build Quality

Next: value
4 out of 5 (4/5)

The Suzuki GN 125 is a solid little bike with a trusty engine and chassis. The finish isn't stellar: Rust around the welds and poor-quality paint are common complaints. Lovely and nice touches to the styling, however, include the chromed indicator stalk and mirrors. The lack of cheap plastics gives the Suzuki GN 125 its retro appeal.

Value and Competitors

Next: Equipment
4 out of 5 (4/5)

A premium, no-frills budget learner/commuter motorcycle. The best bargain is probably a pre-training Suzuki GN 125 where any damage is superficial but the engine is sound. Parts are cheap, insurance is a bonus, and incredible gas mileage figures mean the Suzuki GN125 is ideal for budget runners.

The clock on the Suzuki GN125 is simple, oddly enough it has a gear indicator but no fuel gauge...and a long comfortable seat with plenty of rear seat space and an armrest. The mirrors are nice but almost too wide: owners complain of crashes when filtering! Some car drivers also complain... Suzuki GN125 also has a small tool bag.
