A micrometer is an instrument for the precise measurement of length, which uses a finely calibrated screw mechanism to amplify changes of position into rotations of the screw. It is used for taking measurements more precise than those taken by calipers.

Its basic structure, called the micrometer head, is a screw mechanism, so variations in measurement pressure can appear as variation and differences from person to person in the measured values. The constant pressure mechanism was devised to correct for this and allow measurement at a more uniform pressure. The most widespread type of constant-pressure mechanism is the ratchet stop.

There are micrometers with differently-shaped measurement tips (known as anvils, etc.) to suit a variety of measuring tasks.

The mechanism has a differential screw made up of two screw threads, and uses differences in thread pitch to allow very fine movements.
