1).Carburetor description

A carburetor is a device that mixes air and fuel for an internal combustion engine. You know the idea behind an engine is to burn gasoline to create pressure and then convert that pressure into motion. Only an extremely small amount of gasoline is required for each combustion cycle. Only 10mg of gasoline is consumed per combustion stroke!

2). Why doesn't the carburetor work?

The goal of the carburetor is to mix just the right amount of gasoline with air for the engine to run properly. If there is not enough fuel mixed with the air, the engine will "run lean" and either fail to run or possibly damage the engine. If there is too much fuel mixed in the air, the engine will "run too rich" and either fail to run (flood), run black-smoky, run poorly (get bogged down, stall easily), or at least waste fuel. Carbs are responsible for getting the mix just right.
