How to DIY Car AC Charging in 8 Easy Steps

1 Determine the ambient air temperature

Do not charge the vehicle if the air temperature is 55°F or below. A charging hose with a gauge is recommended. The refrigerant package should contain a chart as shown below to determine the pressure to charge the system based on the ambient air temperature. If a chart is not provided, use the A/C pressure chart below this listing. Following the chart when charging the system will ensure efficient system operation.

2 Locate the low-side service port

This port is usually on the line connecting the accumulator to the compressor. The high-pressure side connection is between the A/C compressor and the condenser. Consult the service manual to verify the exact location of the low-side service port.

*Most 1994 and earlier vehicles use R12 as the original refrigerant, if the vehicle being serviced is still using R12 it must be evacuated and retrofitted. It is illegal to mix R12 with any other refrigerant. Never add refrigerant using the high pressure side port, it is dangerous and could cause injury.

3 Wipe off the dust

Wipe off any dust with a clean rag, then remove the cover from the low-pressure side access port.

4 Connect the charging hose

Connect the charging hose to the low side service port and make sure the connection is secure. If the hose does not connect easily, you may be using the wrong port.

5 Add refrigerant

Follow the instructions on the refrigerant packaging to add refrigerant to the system.

6 Charge the system

After determining the correct pressure using the ambient air pressure chart, continuously monitor the pressure reading while charging the system.

7 Remove the filling hose

After the A/C system has been charged to the proper pressure, remove the charge hose from the low-side service port, leave the canister on the charge hose, and store any extra refrigerant in a dry, cool place.

8 Check the service port cover seal before reinstalling

Make sure there are no cracks, nicks or tears in the seal under the bottle cap. This seal provides added protection should the Schrader valve ever develop a leak.
